For international visitors

English-speaking drivers in Kerala

Every driver we send speaks working English — enough to explain a road closure, negotiate a hotel gate at midnight and tell you which viewpoint is worth the stop. Two of them also speak Hindi and Tamil, which matters more than you would expect once you cross into Tamil Nadu.

What you get

The four things that actually matter here

  • No commission stops. Ever.

The standard practice in Kerala is a detour to a "spice garden", a government emporium or a Kathakali tout who pays the driver 20–30%. We do not do it, our drivers are paid properly so they have no reason to, and if one ever suggests it, tell us and the trip is free.

  • The same driver for the whole trip

Not a relay of strangers at each hotel. You get his name, his mobile number and the vehicle registration on WhatsApp the evening before you start, and he stays with you to the airport.

  • Written quote before you fly

Agreed weeks ahead if you like, itemised down to the driver allowance, and it does not move. No deposit, no card details, nothing paid until the trip.

  • We track your flight

Give us the number. Land four hours late at 3am and the driver is in the bay with a board, at the same price.

What "English-speaking" actually means here

Almost every taxi listing in Kerala claims English-speaking drivers. In practice that ranges from fluent to a dozen words, and you find out on day one.

Ours can hold a conversation, take a phone call from your hotel on your behalf, and explain what is happening when a road is closed. They are not tour guides and we do not pretend they are — a licensed guide is a different profession and we will arrange one for Fort Kochi or Periyar if you want.

What a driver is for is the road, the timing and the logistics. Knowing that Top Station clouds over by three, that the houseboat casts off at 12:30, and that the Munnar road holds water past Neriamangalam after heavy rain.

Multi-day trips are what we are set up for

Most international visitors to Kerala are here for ten days to three weeks and want one car and one driver throughout. That is cheaper than separate transfers and removes every handover problem.

The driver sleeps where you sleep — his allowance is a visible line on your invoice, typically ₹500 a day, and it covers his food and lodging. It is not a tip and it is not optional; it is how the trade works here, and any quote that hides it is recovering it somewhere less visible.

Tipping beyond that is entirely at your discretion and nobody will imply otherwise.

Questions

Asked about this

Do your drivers really speak English?

Working English, yes — enough to handle hotels, road conditions and a problem at midnight. They are drivers, not licensed guides; if you want a guide for Fort Kochi or Periyar we will arrange a proper one.

Will the driver take us to shops for commission?

No. It is standard practice in Kerala and we do not do it. Our drivers are paid properly so they have no reason to. If one ever suggests a "spice garden" detour you did not ask for, tell us and the trip is free.

Do we need to tip the driver?

The driver allowance on your invoice covers his food and lodging — that is not a tip, it is a cost. Anything beyond it is entirely your call and nobody will hint.

Can we book from abroad before we fly?

Yes, and most international guests do, weeks or months ahead. WhatsApp is easiest. Nothing is paid up front and the quoted figure is fixed from the moment we confirm it.

What if we want to change the plan mid-trip?

Tell the driver. Route changes are re-quoted on the same rate card in front of you, not invented at the end. Most small changes cost nothing.
