Four hours inland through the spice belt. The last hour climbs through cardamom and pepper estates and the air changes noticeably. The Periyar boat ride is the reason most people come, and the 7:30am boat is the one worth catching.

Flight delays — give us the flight number and we track it. The driver waits and the fare does not change.
Stops on the way — the ones named below cost nothing extra. Tell the driver at the start so he paces the drive.
Worth knowing
What we tell people booking Thekkady
The route runs via Muvattupuzha, Thodupuzha, Kattappana, Vandiperiyar. These are the things that actually change how the day goes.
-
Periyar boat tickets sell out. The 7:30am and 9:30am departures are the ones with animals at the water; book them the day before at the Ecotourism counter, not through a hotel tout.
-
Kumily is the town, Thekkady is the reserve gate. They are two kilometres apart and every hotel calls itself Thekkady. Give us the hotel name and we will get it right.
-
The Tamil Nadu border is four kilometres past Kumily. If you are carrying on to Madurai we arrange the inter-state permit in advance and quote it inside the total.
-
Cardamom estate stops on the Vandiperiyar stretch cost nothing and take twenty minutes. Ask the driver rather than the roadside agents.
Questions
Cochin airport to Thekkady, answered
How far is Thekkady from Cochin airport?
About 160 km via Thodupuzha and Kattappana. Four hours with one tea stop.
What does a cab from Kochi airport to Thekkady cost?
See the table on this page — a Dzire is the entry price, larger vehicles scale from the same rate card. Tolls and GST are included and the figure is fixed before you travel.
Can we do Munnar and Thekkady in one trip?
Yes, and it is the more sensible way to do it — Munnar to Thekkady is only about 90 km. Our 5N/6D circuit covers Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey with one driver throughout.
Is the road to Thekkady difficult?
Less so than the Munnar road. It climbs steadily rather than in hairpins. The surface past Kattappana is patchy in monsoon but nothing that needs a four-wheel drive.
