Worth knowing

What we tell people booking Athirappilly

The route runs via Angamaly, Chalakudy, Forest road. These are the things that actually change how the day goes.

  • Go before 9am. By eleven the car park is full and the path down to the base is a queue.

  • Vazhachal falls is five kilometres further on the same road and takes fifteen minutes. Almost nobody stops. Ask the driver.

  • The forest road past Vazhachal closes to traffic at 6pm sharp. If you are carrying on toward Valparai, you need to be through well before then.

  • The path to the base of the falls is steep and slippery in monsoon. Not one for weak knees, and the view from the top is genuinely good anyway.

Questions

Cochin airport to Athirappilly, answered

Can Athirappilly be done as a day trip from Cochin airport?

Comfortably. It is an hour and a half each way. Out at 7am, at the falls by 8:30 before the crowds, back at the airport by 2pm.

What does the taxi cost to Athirappilly?

The one-way figure is on this page. For a there-and-back with waiting time, ask for a day hire instead — it comes to less than two separate transfers.

When are the falls at their best?

July to September for full volume, though you will be soaked and the path is slick. October and November give you the water without the drenching.

Staying longer

A multi-day circuit keeps one driver and one vehicle for the whole trip, and works out cheaper than separate transfers.
