The route runs via Alappuzha, Kollam, Kazhakkoottam, NH 66. These are the things that actually change how the day goes.

Varkala is ninety minutes short of Kovalam and a cliff rather than a beach. If you have not chosen between them, say so and the driver will tell you which suits your plans.

The Kollam bypass took forty minutes off this route. Older fare quotes you find online still assume the old road.

Padmanabhaswamy temple in Trivandrum is a twenty-minute detour and a strict dress code. Worth building in rather than doubling back.

At this distance a one-way drop and a two-day hire cost within a few hundred rupees of each other. Ask for both figures.

Is a taxi from Kochi to Kovalam worth it over the train?
The train to Trivandrum is cheaper and about as quick, then you still need a cab for the last 16 km. The taxi wins on luggage, late arrivals and going door to door.
Can we stop at Varkala on the way?
Yes. It is directly on the route and adds about an hour with a walk on the cliff. No extra charge for the stop.
