Thekkady: how to get the 7:30am Periyar boat

The Periyar boat ride is worth doing at dawn and a waste of time at noon. How the ticketing actually works, and why hotel touts cost you the good departure.

Kochi Munnar Taxi

The Periyar boat ride is the reason most people come to Thekkady. Done at dawn it is genuinely good. Done at midday it is ninety minutes on a lake looking at trees, and people leave wondering what the fuss was about.

The difference is entirely the departure time, and getting the right one takes a small amount of planning that nobody tells you about.

The departures

Boats run roughly:

Departure What you get
7:30am The one to get. Animals at the water, still lake, mist
9:30am Decent. Second choice
11:30am Poor. Hot, animals gone into shade
2:00pm Poor
4:00pm Fair. Second-best after the dawn boat

Times shift with the season and the water level. Treat these as the shape rather than gospel.

Why dawn works: elephants, sambar, gaur and wild boar come to the water in the early morning, before the heat. By ten they are back in the trees. This is not a park where animals are fed for the boats — it is a genuine reserve, and you see what happens to be at the shore.

How to actually get a ticket

This is the part that catches people.

Tickets are sold at the Kerala Forest Development Corporation counter inside the reserve, at Thekkady itself. Not at your hotel. Not by your driver.

What works: go to the counter the afternoon before and buy tickets for the next morning’s 7:30 boat. Takes ten minutes.

What does not work:

  • Turning up at 7am hoping to buy for the 7:30. The dawn boat sells out.
  • Booking online. There is a government portal, availability is thin, and it goes down.
  • Buying through a hotel or a tout on the street. They charge a markup for the same ₹-value ticket, and they will often steer you to a later boat because that is what they have.

Carry ID. Photo identification is required per person for the ticket. Passports for foreign nationals.

The gate opens before the boat

You need to be at the reserve entrance by about 6:45am for the 7:30 boat. There is a short walk or a shuttle from the gate down to the jetty, plus a security check and a lifejacket queue.

Your driver should know this. Ours do. If you are self-driving, set the alarm earlier than feels reasonable.

Kumily is not Thekkady

Small thing, causes real confusion.

  • Kumily is the town — hotels, shops, the spice market, restaurants.
  • Thekkady is the reserve gate, about 2 km further in.

Almost every hotel calls itself “Thekkady” regardless of where it is. Give your driver the hotel name, not the town — otherwise you may be dropped 2 km from where you are sleeping.

Getting there

From Cochin airport: about 160 km, four hours, through Muvattupuzha, Thodupuzha and Kattappana. Steady climbing rather than the hairpins of the Munnar road.

From Munnar: about 90 km, three hours, and it is one of the nicer drives in Kerala — cardamom estates the whole way, with the air changing noticeably as you come down through Vandiperiyar.

This is why the standard Kerala circuit runs Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey. The legs connect and none is over four hours.

While you are there

The boat is ninety minutes. Thekkady is worth a night rather than a morning.

  • Cardamom and pepper estate walks — twenty minutes, no charge if your driver arranges it rather than a roadside agent taking commission.
  • The spice market in Kumily — actual working market, not a tourist one. Prices are better than Kochi.
  • Bamboo rafting — a half-day guided trip through the reserve with forest department guides. Far better wildlife odds than the boat, and physically real. Book at the same counter.
  • Kathakali and kalaripayattu shows — nightly in Kumily, an hour, touristy but well done.

Tamil Nadu is four kilometres away

The border is just past Kumily. If you are carrying on to Madurai it is about four hours from here.

The inter-state permit for that should be arranged in advance and quoted inside your total. If an operator wants to collect it at the checkpost, you are likely paying twice.

The one-line version

Buy your ticket the afternoon before, for the 7:30am boat, at the counter inside the reserve. Everything else about Thekkady is easy.

Questions

Asked about this

What time is the best Periyar boat ride?

The 7:30am departure. Animals come to the water early and the lake is still. By the 11:30am boat you are looking at trees and sharing the deck with a full load.

How do I book Periyar boat tickets?

At the Kerala Forest Development Corporation counter inside the reserve, in person, the day before. Online availability is limited and unreliable. Hotel touts charge a markup for the same ticket.

Will I definitely see elephants at Periyar?

No. It is a wild reserve, not a safari park. The dawn boat gives you a reasonable chance of elephants, deer and boar at the water. The midday boat gives you very little.

How far is Thekkady from Munnar?

About 90 km and three hours through the cardamom hills. It is the easiest leg of the standard Kerala circuit and one of the prettier ones.
