Munnar or Wayanad: which hill station, for whom

Two very different Kerala hill stations compared on crowds, driving time, weather and what there actually is to do — by people who drive to both every week.

Kochi Munnar Taxi

We drive to both most weeks. They are not competing versions of the same thing — they are genuinely different places, and the right answer depends entirely on who is asking.

The short version

Pick Munnar if…

It is your first trip to Kerala. Munnar is the postcard and it earns it. Tea to the horizon in every direction, the drive up through Neriamangalam, Top Station on a clear afternoon.

You have three or four days. Three and a half hours from the airport means you land and arrive the same day with time left. Wayanad eats a whole day at each end.

You want it cold. At 1,600 m, January nights get down to about 5°C. Wayanad at 800 m does not do this.

You want things laid out for you. Eravikulam, the Tea Museum, Mattupetty, Echo Point, Top Station — a full day covers them and everything is signposted.

The downside: in December and January, Munnar is busy in a way that changes the experience. The Top Station road becomes a queue and rooms cost double.

Pick Wayanad if…

You have been to Munnar. This is the most common reason and it is a good one.

You want forest rather than plantation. Wayanad borders Bandipur and Nagarhole. It is contiguous with one of the largest wild elephant populations in Asia. Munnar is beautiful but it is farmland — every hillside is worked.

You want space. Even in peak season Wayanad is quiet. Edakkal caves get busy; almost nothing else does.

You want to be doing something. Edakkal caves are a genuine climb to 5,000-year-old petroglyphs. Chembra Peak is a real half-day hike. Soochipara is a waterfall you swim at rather than photograph from a platform.

You are going on to Coorg or Mysore. Wayanad is on the way. Munnar is not on the way to anything.

The downside: six hours from Kochi, ending with the Thamarassery ghat — nine hairpins in five kilometres. Leave the airport after 1pm and you are doing it in the dark, which we would rather not.

The airport question

If you have not booked flights yet, this changes things:

  • Kozhikode (Calicut) airport is 90 km from Wayanad against 250 from Kochi. If Wayanad is the trip, fly to Calicut.
  • Kannur airport is also close to north Wayanad.

We will tell you this even though it means we do not get the run. A six-hour drive you did not need to take is not a good start.

What about both?

They are roughly eight hours apart, in opposite directions from Kochi. Doing both properly needs eight days minimum and a lot of that is driving.

If you have eight days, we would rather send you Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey. Those three connect naturally and none of the legs is over four hours.

Wayanad pairs much better with Coorg, which is directly beyond it on the same road.

Weather, briefly

Both are wet June to September and both are lovely in it if you accept the mist.

The difference: Munnar’s monsoon is more disruptive. Landslides on the Neriamangalam stretch close the road most years for a day or two. Wayanad gets heavy rain but the roads are lower and less prone to slipping.

Both are at their best in February and November — clear air, no crowds, sensible rates.

Our actual answer

When people ask us on WhatsApp, we ask one question back: have you been to Kerala before?

  • No → Munnar. It is closer, it is easier, and it is the one you have seen photographs of.
  • Yes → Wayanad. It is the one you have not.

Neither is a mistake. But sending a first-timer six hours to Wayanad when they have four days is, and sending someone who has already done Munnar back to Munnar is a waste of their week.

Questions

Asked about this

Is Munnar or Wayanad better?

Munnar for tea estates, dramatic altitude and more to see. Wayanad for forest, wildlife and far fewer people. If it is your first trip to Kerala, Munnar. If you have done Munnar, Wayanad.

Which is closer to Cochin airport?

Munnar, by a long way — 115 km and three and a half hours, against 250 km and six hours to Wayanad. If you are landing at Kochi, that gap decides it for a short trip.

Can I do both Munnar and Wayanad in one trip?

They are about eight hours apart and in opposite directions from Kochi. Doing both needs eight days minimum. Most people should pick one.

Which is better for wildlife?

Wayanad, clearly. It borders Bandipur and Nagarhole and you have a real chance of elephants. Munnar has the Nilgiri tahr at Eravikulam and little else.
