Cochin airport to Munnar: taxi, bus or train?

An honest comparison of every way to get from Cochin airport to Munnar — real costs, real journey times, and the option we tell people to take when it is not ours.

Kochi Munnar Taxi

We are a taxi company, so treat what follows accordingly. But we would rather tell you the truth and lose the booking than put four people in a car who would have been happier on a bus.

There are three ways to cover the 115 km from Cochin airport to Munnar. One of them does not exist.

The train that isn’t

There is no train to Munnar. There is no railway station in Munnar, no line into the Idukki hills, and no plan to build one.

The nearest station is Aluva, about 25 km from the airport. If a website offers you a “train to Munnar” it means a train to Aluva and then road for the remaining 105 km — which is the bus option below, with extra steps.

Worth stating plainly because we get asked most weeks.

The bus

Genuinely cheap, genuinely slow, and perfectly fine if you are travelling light.

How it works: airport to Aluva bus station (about 25 km, local bus or a short taxi), then a KSRTC bus from Aluva to Munnar. The Munnar buses run through the day, roughly hourly in the morning and thinning out after mid-afternoon.

Time: five to six hours all in, including the change and the wait. The bus itself takes about four and a half hours because it stops constantly.

The catches:

  • The last useful Aluva–Munnar bus goes mid-afternoon. Land in the evening and you are staying in Aluva or Kochi anyway.
  • Luggage on a KSRTC bus is your problem, on your lap or between your feet. Two large suitcases is not realistic.
  • It drops you at Munnar town bus stand. Most hotels and estate stays are 5–20 km further, and you will be finding a local taxi at the end of it, in the dark, having already been travelling for six hours.
  • The ghat road on a full bus with no reserved seat is a long afternoon.

Take the bus if: you are one or two people, backpacking, arriving in the morning, and staying in Munnar town itself. It is a good option and we will tell you so.

The taxi

Time: about three and a half hours, door to door, direct to your hotel.

What actually makes the difference is not the speed — it is the four things around it:

  1. Flight tracking. Give us the flight number and the driver arrives when the aircraft does. Delays cost you nothing. A bus does not wait.
  2. Door to door. Estate stays outside Munnar are the good ones and they are 10–25 km from the bus stand on roads with no public transport.
  3. Luggage. Boot space, not your knees.
  4. Stopping. Cheeyappara falls, Valara, the Tea Museum, the first viewpoint where the tea starts — all on the route, all free to stop at. The bus goes past them.

The honest cost comparison matters more than the sticker price. Our fare is per vehicle, not per person:

Travellers Bus, roughly Taxi (Dzire) Verdict
1 Much cheaper — Take the bus
2 Cheaper — Bus if light, taxi if not
3 Similar per head — Close call
4+ — Cheaper per head Take the taxi

Add luggage, a late landing, or a hotel outside town, and the calculation shifts to the car well before four people.

What we actually recommend

  • Solo backpacker, morning landing, staying in town → bus, without hesitation.
  • Couple, light bags, flexible → either. Bus if you enjoy the journey being part of it.
  • Family, or anyone with check-in luggage → car.
  • Landing after 4pm → car, or a night in Kochi. The last Munnar bus will have gone and the ghat road after dark is not a first-day experience.
  • Landing after 8pm → night in Kochi, 6am start. We will suggest this even though it costs us the evening run.

One thing nobody mentions

Whichever you choose, arrive in Munnar in daylight if it is your first time.

The last 40 km climbs through continuous hairpins with a valley on one side. In daylight it is the best part of the trip. In the dark it is two hours of nothing, and if the weather has closed in it is worse than nothing.

Plan the arrival, not just the departure.
